Economic Justice

Our UU principles of respect for the dignity of all and for the democratic process call us to extend the principles of justice to the economic sphere.  We join in the struggle to assure that all Pennsylvanians have the basic means of survival, access to living wage work, and the right to orgtanize for justice and dignity on the job.

We have two Teams engaged in the struggle for economic justice:

  • Basic Human Needs:  Despite the Legislature's abolition of "General Assistance" last year, we contineu to advocate with allies for meeting the basic hnees of all Pennsylvanians. We partner with PA Cares for ALL and with the Coalition for Low Income Pennsylvians (CLIP).  Our most current issue is to oppose the expansion of exploitative lending to the poor by  so-called Payday Lending operators.  This campaign, led by the PA Stop Payday Lending Coalition, requires urgent attention to persuading the PA Senate to block the most recent efforts to push through enabling legislation.  Contact Team Leaders Cassi Schaffer cassischaffer@hotmail.com to join this Team.
  • March 3rd Update on Payday Lending Legislation
  • Restaurant Workers' Justice Campaign This year we are launching  a partnership with the Restaurant Opportunities Center, a nation-wide grassroots organizing project, and the UU Service Committee, to advance economic justice for this key sector of the workforce.  Together with the workers and allies, we'll work for the raising of the federal minimum wage for tipped workers, still at onlye $2.13/hr. for the past 20 years.
